The French coastal fishing and especially Mediterranean fishing industry deals in ultra-fresh products. This sector is usually dealing with the high end of the market. For trawlers and boats of similar size which are strongly dependent on the evolution of oil prices, the RP3E project aims to propose alternative models in terms of fishing craft, to take market conditions into account better and finally to increase the versatility of this type of vessel. To do this, testing of the economic potential (fuel and auction sales) generated by three different fishing crafts: (1) midwater trawler equipped with a fibre net with less resistance, (2) a bow net or other type, (3) fishing jig is planned.
Using multivariate analysis the RP3E project, certified in July 2009, aims to help determine the effectiveness of the various techniques considered above by measuring the fuel consumption, CO2 production, the nature and quantity of the products caught and their market positioning and help the profession to test and validate fishing options to prepare for the changing business practices for fishermen to allow them to maximise the fisheries resources in a more sustainable way while expanding the range of products landed for auction.
