Aquaculture as a challenge

The PACA Marine Cluster counts among the major actors in aquaculture development and sea product processing in the Euro-Mediterranean territory.

On 19 June 2008, Ubifrance’s Euro-Mediterranean Unit, organised a seminar at the Marseille Regional Prefecture on aquaculture development and sea product processing. This seminar was attended by some forty participants representing all of the actors of the sector, businesses, researchers and institutions, coming from the Northern and the Southern shore of the Mediterranean (France, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Italy and Algeria).Four business members of the Marine Cluster were in attendance: Aqualog, the Fermes Aquacoles of Tamaris, Provence Aquaculture and Cannes Aquaculture. The Marine Cluster presented its strategy for aquaculture that safeguards the environment in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur territory, stretching to Languedoc Roussillon and to Corsica. In a context that is more favourable today (relations between fishermen and aqua farmers have improved), a high level production standard is required, investors have committed themselves and the importance of local professionals has been recognized. Outstanding obstacles include the availability of sites, coexistence with other activities of the economic sector (tourism, yachting, French Navy) and above all real estate pressure. The Marine Cluster supports several projects aimed at ensuring the sustainability of aquaculture activities in its territory and offers its expertise to its Euro-Mediterranean neighbours.
